A humble apology

I'm sorry.

It was wrong of me to impose upon my readers in such an insensitive way. With completely selfish motives, I have consistently used the HTML attribute for opening a new window when following a link from my blog. Thinking this would keep people from wandering away from the blog and never finding their way back, I have callously inserted the code at every possible turn. Maybe you wanted to navigate away. Maybe you hate having multiple windows open. Maybe you are smart enough to use a tabbed browser and do the right-click "open in new tab" thing anyway. But whatever your situation, I should have allowed you the freedom to choose how you would like to follow my links. I will immediately cease and desist from all malicious use of the 'target="_blank"' code. Furthermore, I will make an effort to clear away the instances from my blog template. As much as I would like for you to come back, I will leave that decision in your hands from now on.

But I have some questions.

  1. Is there any HTML code (or JavaScript for that matter) that would allow you to designate that links open automatically in a new tab, if the user's browser supports tabs? I'm not asking from the user end how to control that behavior, because I know there is a setting for it. But from the developer side, is there a way to build that aspect into the design?

  2. Does anyone have any experience with the new IE7? Probably the most obvious new feature is that it allows tabbed browsing. However, I haven't discovered a way to follow a link in a new tab. That's annoying. Anybody care to help me out?

  3. Similarly, I have my google toolbar set to open a new window with results. What I really want is a new tab for the results instead. Any ideas?
A good answer to any of these is probably worth a donut.

Speaking of which, I finally was able to award my first blog-donut yesterday. Maybe there is some other enticement that would encourage more interactivity on my blog. My understanding is that I have a solid 10-12 people reading on a regular basis, but it is rare that most of them weigh in with comments. It makes me jealous of my friend Jason who logged a total of 46 comments on a single post (granted, over 15% of them are mine).

Well, if I have offended you in the past over my unfriendly HTML techniques, I hope you will return and maybe even post your comments. I'd love to have less diatribe and more dialogue. Thanks for taking the time to read.

I thought the links were pretty sweet, its easy enough for me to close the blog window if I am done with it, but since you provide so many links, it was easy to access all of the content without navigating away from the primary page.

Jason -

I'm sorry that I've taken away a feature that you liked. If you are using Firefox as your browser - which I highly recommend over any of the Microsoft products, then you can simply right-click on any link in my blog and open it in a new tab or in a new window. The power is all yours my friend.

Yes! Two comments on a single post!

Are you counting me as a part of the solid 10-12 people reading your blog? I do read your blog regularly but I'm not solid. I haven't worked out in a while. I would be honored to recieve a donut but I don't think it would help in my pursuit of solidarity... or solidness...solidation... oh whatever, you know what I mean.
